PGT Door Installation: The Tampa Owner’s Guide
PGT door installation in Tampa typically runs $450 to $1,850 installed depending on the door type, slab vs. full frame replacement, and whether you’re dealing with a standard swing door or an impact-rated slider. We stock PGT-compatible rollers, hinges, handlesets, threshold caps, and sweep seals on the truck, and most single-door installations go in same-day once we’ve matched the part to your model.
Here’s how Tampa homeowners usually find us: the door starts dragging against the threshold, the handle spins without engaging the latch, or the panel jumps its track during a storm. Sometimes it’s a failed roller that’s been grinding for months. Other times it’s a hinge that pulled loose from a water-softened jamb. Either way, you know something’s wrong, and you want it matched, priced, and fixed without a second guess.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT builds several door lines, and Tampa homes tend to fall into three groups. The WinGuard series is the impact-rated aluminum line you see along Bayshore Boulevard and Davis Islands, where wind-load requirements and salt exposure are both brutal. The Spectrum line is vinyl, common in newer construction in Westchase and New Tampa. The ClassicVue and older EZ-Build frames show up in houses built in the 1990s and early 2000s around Carrollwood and Brandon.
The compatibility gotcha: PGT changed roller housing dimensions between the WinGuard 1000 and WinGuard 2000 series, and a roller that fits one will bind in the other. We pull the panel, take the roller to the truck, and match by housing width and wheel diameter, not by guessing from the door sticker. Frame stamps and the AAMA label on the hinge-side jamb give us the series, glass makeup, and production year. For OEM vs. aftermarket: PGT’s original parts carry the exact extrusion profile, but for rollers and sweep seals we often use the same commercial-grade equivalents the manufacturer white-labels, which cuts cost without cutting lifespan.
Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing
- Door drags or scrapes along the track. The roller wheels have flat-spotted from years of use, or the track itself has worn a groove. In Tampa, fine sand and shell grit accelerate this, and a dragging door will eventually snap the roller housing.
- Handle spins but the latch won’t engage. The internal lock mechanism inside the handleset has stripped. PGT multi-point handlesets wear at the gear teeth, not just the latch bolt, so a simple swap of the exterior handle often misses the problem.
- Panel jumps or shudders when sliding. A roller has seized and the panel is riding on bare aluminum. Continued use will gouge the bottom rail, and then you’re looking at a panel replacement instead of a roller swap.
- Water staining at the bottom corners of the jamb. The threshold cap or sweep seal has degraded. In Tampa’s rainy season, a failed sweep means water wicks into the subfloor and the jamb kicks the door out of square.
- Door won’t close flush against the frame. Hinges have loosened from the jamb, or the jamb itself has swelled from moisture. We check rough opening square before anything else because a door that fights the frame will wear every part faster.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Tampa, expect the following installed ranges for PGT door work:
- Roller replacement (per panel): $180 – $340 installed, including track cleaning and alignment
- Handleset replacement: $220 – $480 installed, depending on multi-point vs. single-point lock
- Threshold cap and sweep seal: $140 – $260 installed
- Hinge rebuild on swing door: $250 – $450 installed, including jamb repair if needed
- Full slab replacement (non-impact PGT door): $650 – $1,100 installed
- Full impact-rated PGT door (WinGuard): $1,200 – $1,850 installed, permit included where required
Every price goes on paper before work starts and does not move at the door. Labor, parts, hardware, and the written 365-Day Done Right Promise are all in that number. If the installation fails within the year, Elliot Vance and our crew return at no charge, no labor exclusions, no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s an honest line here. You can check track alignment with a level, and you can clean roller channels with a vacuum and a rag. Those are safe. What you shouldn’t do is remove a PGT sliding panel yourself. A full WinGuard panel weighs 180 to 250 pounds, and when a roller seizes, that panel wants to jump off the track and onto the person lifting it. We’ve seen homeowners in Tampa attempt this and finish with a cracked glass unit and a sprained back.
Hinges are less dangerous but more deceptive. Drilling a stripped hinge screw and filling it with a toothpick works for about six weeks. Then the door sags, the latch stops lining up, and the jamb screws tear out a bigger hole. We repair the tear-out with solid material and rehang the door square so it operates without dragging. If the opening isn’t square, nothing else matters, we fix that first. Call (850) 821-3041 and we’ll give you a written price before anyone touches a screwdriver.
FAQs
Rollers on a PGT slider typically last 7 to 10 years in Tampa, but salt air and sand near the water can cut that to 5 or 6. If the door sees daily use and the track is never cleaned, expect flat spots and a rough glide around year six. Call (850) 821-3041 and we can inspect the panel and tell you exactly what’s still serviceable.
Yes if the failure is in the hardware, rollers, seals, or hinge mounting. We can match and replace specific parts without swapping the whole door. The exceptions are broken glass, a bent frame, or a panel that’s been run on seized rollers long enough to chew the bottom rail. We’ll tell you which one you have and give you the honest number either way.
Most roller, handleset, and threshold replacements are done in 60 to 90 minutes per door. Full slab replacements take half a day. We bring the common PGT parts on the truck, so there’s no week-long wait while a part ships from the factory.
We carry PGT-compatible rollers, handlesets, hinges, threshold caps, and sweep seals on the truck for the WinGuard, Spectrum, and ClassicVue lines. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with PGT, and we also keep parts for CGI, CWS, and ES Windows doors when a home has mixed brands. If a part isn’t on the truck, we order it and come back as soon as it lands.
